Chingota: Journalists are agents of change

Public Affairs Committee (PAC) chairperson Reverend Felix Chingota on Wednesday said the committee recognises the importance of cultivating a good working relationship with the media for the benefit of the masses it serves.

Chingota was speaking in Blantyre at a meeting (PAC) organised for executive committee members, trustees, mediators, and representatives of mother bodies to familiarise themselves with media operations and how they could interact with practitioners when involved in mediation process.

The chairperson said the challenge of undertaking mediation exercise and advocacy on crucial national issues required that PAC developed a sound mediation strategy.

Said Chingota: “Institutions that play a checks and balance role need to develop sound regulations in managing media so that the public is kept abreast of what is happening at national level. We undertake mediation and advocacy on behalf of the people.”

He told the gathering that it was for that reason that PAC invited Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter chairperson and journalist for Nation Publications Limited (NPL), Anthony Kasunda, and Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL) editor Innocent Chitosi to share experiences and tips on media management.

“We must, as a nation, utilise the media because journalists are agents of change in this country. There are times we shy away from the media, but the latter has played an important role in Malawi.

“Several incidents have been revealed by the media either during the electoral process or even beyond such an event. Be that as it may, we must use the media responsibly,” said Chingota.

During the interaction, Kasunda shared from a reporter’s perspective while Chitosi briefed the gathering on the role of an editor in the production of a news article.
